Afghanistan: building agricultural teacher education at NAEC in Kabul

Tailor made programme Afghanistan
After decades of conflict, Afghanistan’s agricultural education system needed rebuilding, and with it the training of teachers for agricultural high schools across the country. The National Agricultural Education College (NAEC) in Kabul was founded to meet this need. It was established within the ATVET project (Improving Agricultural Education in Afghanistan), a ten-year programme led by Wageningen University & Research and funded by the Dutch government.

Aeres University of Applied Sciences made a substantial contribution to this programme. We trained NAEC’s teachers, teacher trainers and management in modern, practice-oriented and student-centred teaching. Together with Afghan colleagues, we developed training programmes for agricultural vocational education, so that future teachers could connect theory with the realities of Afghan farming.

As NAEC grew, the ambition grew too: to develop the college into a fully-fledged university of applied sciences for the agricultural sector. Aeres helped design the basis for this higher vocational education programme, drawing on decades of Dutch experience in applied agricultural education.

The project showed what long-term partnership can achieve. Afghan educators became the driving force of their own institution and passed on knowledge and skills to a new generation of agricultural teachers throughout Afghanistan.
